Set and remove step action

Step actions are a key element of an instruction, helping users understand what action needs to be performed. By providing a clear visual cue, step actions make instructions more intuitive and easier to follow without requiring additional text.

We have enhanced the Instruction Editor to give editors greater flexibility when working with step actions:

  • Remove a step action from a step.
  • Add a step action to a step that does not have an action yet.
  • Update an existing step action without the need to create a new recording and update the entire step.

Additional notes about this new functionality

  • The existing hide/show step action functionality will be deprecated in a future release and migrated to the remove step action functionality.
  • When a hidden step action is replaced, the hidden state is automatically removed.
  • Within exercises, steps without a step action behave the same as steps with a hidden step action.

This enhancement makes it even faster and easier to create high-quality instructions.

Instruction Editor improvements

The new Instruction Editor and SelfGuide Recorder experience, released during spring this year, has been well received by editors.

As adoption increased, daily use and customer feedback helped us identify several opportunities for further improvements.

With this release, we have addressed a number of stability and usability issues, including:

  • Improved reliability when performing an editing action based on a mouse movement (e.g. add a step, move a note and resize a note) followed by other editing actions on the same element in a short timeframe.
  • Prevented save errors when initiating a save when a save operation is still in progress.
  • Fixed an issue where notes could be unintentionally removed when resizing them.
  • Resolved save errors when updating a step combined with adding censor areas to the updated step.
  • Improved recording reliability on devices with less performance, overcoming steps with unsupported step actions.
  • Creating a recording on a device with less performance could result in a step with an unsupported step action.
  • Updated the step pane to always focus on a newly added step, even when another step was selected.

All above improvements are available directly.

Improved save experience

In addition, we have improved the save experience within the Instruction Editor. The editor no longer re-renders after each save operation, resulting in a smoother and more responsive editing experience. This enhancement will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks to allow us to gather feedback and monitor performance.

Bugfixes

This release includes the bug fixes below:

  • Fixed an issue where Quick Check notifications could still be sent after the Quick Check date had already been updated.
  • The REST API returned the wrong error code when receiving a request to create a user without a username. The expected 400 Bad Request is returned now.
  • Resolved intermittent image loading failures caused by browser cache clearing combined with expired image URL tokens.
  • A course tile contained an incorrect instruction count when the course contained one or more imported instructions.
  • Fixed the issue that an instruction tile in a course or user guide did not show instruction tags.
